"BCGEU Members Build Strong Communities"

Nora Patrich and Juan Sanchez, internationally-acclaimed Vancouver artists, painted this mural in the spring of 1994. The mural is on display in the BCGEU auditorium at 4911 Canada Way in Burnaby. It measures 11 metres by almost 3 metres high.

The mural was sponsored by the B.C. Arts Council’s Artist and Working Life Program and by the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union. The artists researched the project by visiting many BCGEU work sites and photographing members at work.

“It was a challenge,” said Patrich. “There was such a variety of people to draw from, and they fill vital roles in our communities.”

“For us, the central figure symbolizes a sense of unity in the community and the labour movement, and in a deeper sense, the connection with earth and nurturing energies,” said Patrich.

Limited edition prints of the mural are available through the BCGEU International Solidarity Committee.

The BCGEU public website has been maintained and enhanced since its inception in 1996 by Monster Chops Creative. Monster Chops also collaborated on the original design and implementation. Monster Chops has worked closely with BCGEU staff to add functionality and features, and to respond to feedback from users.

As a result, this new website reflects all the best lessons learned over the years, as well as the collective ideas of Monster Chops, BCGEU communications staff and the website's users as well. It has been our pleasure and privilege to work with the fine communications staff at BCGEU head office.
